It was a case of RTFM. I had not done DCOMCFG as specified in the Help file, so slinkserver was running under LocalSystem. Doing so made it VERY unhappy, so it hung (with an error dialog up I think but as there is no desktop for LocalSystem its hard to be sure). When I made it run with a valid user account with rights to the screen and registry, it all worked.
