Well, I'm a big fan of doing things the most expensive, most elaborate way.

For a simple compressor, limiter, check out a music store near you that carries used gear. Musicians are always selling that kind of thing. DBX makes some good ones that sell, new, for $250 or so... I'll bet you could find a used one for $100.

As for knowing that the current song is too loud, how about using either a mixer or DXS to run a copy of the audio into the CDJ system, and using a little VB app to monitor level?
