Sony DVD S-Link problem

I have two Sony DVD players the single disc S7000 the 200 disc CX850D

Using the S-Link cable that came with the Slink-e plugged into the S-Link0 (or 1 or 2 or 3) port connecting to one of the players, I can not determine why the status light on the slink-e remains yellow and the player is not recognized.

Based on the responses to Lee Andron's 12/31/99 message I wonder if there is a difference in the way that the Sony DVD players use the ports.

I refuse to believe that both of my players are defective, I may in fact be an idiot but I don't think its difficult to chose the correct port on the player (big letters that say S-LINK), and I'd like to think that the cable sent with the slink-e is ok (it passes simple resistance/continuity checks anyway).
