Slink-e / CDJ Discussion Archive #7 Re: Handheld PC/Windows-CE/Slink-E interoperabilitPosted By: Roy Weston <rweston@g...> In Response To: Handheld PC/Windows-CE/Slink-E interoperability??? (Scott Smith)
I'm using the Jornada as a hand held connection to a Win98 Desktop to operate both the Slinke and X10 devices. Programming in VB, I'm using the Winsock control on both machines for communications, but I also have a earlier version that uses Active Server and a Web browser. I found the Winsock interface to be a lot cleaner if you want to do your own WinCE programming. The advantage of this set-up is that the Handheld can be updated in real-time (channel, track information, etc.) which I don't believe the Pronto can handle. It can also display Album Covers, which is a plus. The big downside right now is that the Jornada has to be hardwired to the network for this to work (putting CAT5 cabling in the dry wall wasn't much fun). I have had success with wireless ethernet in Deskops and Laptops but there are currently no wireless Ethernet card available for WindowsCE devices. (Though I hear that HP are planning a wireless "BlueTooth" version of the Jornada for later this year). I don't know if the IrDA port on the Jornada is of any use in a case like this. The IrDA protocal requires handshaking between devices and only operates over distances of a few feet. Regards, Roy Responses To This Message
