Building packets

I am trying to write a set of Java classes to communicate with my S-linke. I am receiving and decoding packets without a hitch. However I am having difficulty building my own packets.

My question is: What is the correct format of a "get serial number" packet? I have been trying both {226, 255, 12, 224} and {255, 255, 12, 224} without luck. I don't know if my packets are malformed or if I am getting tripped up in the low level details of sending them.
