I would bet that that new A50 models are similar to the A2 that you own. I also have an A2 (and a B2) and they do support a discreet power on command from the Sony remotes. I have three different remotes that can create it. It's just that I can't re-create it via Slinke and I can't learn it from the Sony remotes to either EZLEARN or HomeVision.
I have done the serial port control. I've successfully done all the published commands for it. The only problem is that I'm already up to 6 com ports on my home automation PC and I don't really want to control it this way. I do all my IR control from HomeVision. I have a few events that send the Sony SYSTEM OFF command. Because of this, leaving the system on all the time is not possible - it just gets shut off anyways.
