How long can a serial cable be? Serial RS232 is an unbalanced system. Twisted pair does it no real good for noise rejection. In the Aerospace defense world data centers where I have woked for about 40 years we have run RS232 cables distances of 200 feet without problem at baud rates up to about 56khz. we used untwisted UNSHIELDED cable since capacitance is A BIGGER PROBLEM THEN NOISE. The original RS232 SPEC spec says 50 feet.

If you want a balanced transmission then I think the standard is RS 449. In that mode you can run 4000 feet and twisted pair is required. I am pretty sure Black Box sells little converters that go from standard RS232 25 pin to RJ45 connectors (CAT5) and convert the two signals Rx and Tx to 449 as a balanced transmission. I think they are about $60 apiece. Pricey but will work the longer haul.
