What version of firmware do you have? When you moved the Slink-e closer and farther away, did you remove power to it? If you have a Slink-e 1.0, 2.0, or 2.1 it's posssible that you are experiencing a bug which causes these units to become unresponsive, albeit infrequently. They of course become responsive again after power cycling. If this is the case, there is a 2.3 firware upgrade available which fixes this.
