The (1) plan is definately doable and easy IF YOU ARE A PROGRAMMER. I think Colby distributes a sample amp The TV remote that has all you neeed to know if you are a Programmer. I code in VB and my whole HT is based on a concept as you describe, the only difference is that I use the Philips pronto as the input device since the PC is only used to control the A/V system and HT system. It is very easy to have a VB program talk to slinkeserve and have it send commands to the CDJ application and return responses back to the driving application.

if you are a programmer and want some sample code I can probably send you some fragments from my system I bypass CDJ for IR functuions and actually just send low level IR commands directly to the IR controlled devices (Except for the CD player which is on Slink)
