slinke OCX hangs the system when slinke isn't plugged in?

Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem. I've experienced it on two different systems and using software written both in Visual Basic and Borland C++ Builder 3. In all four combinations it locks up the system solid on the very first command. Does anyone know of anything I can do that will keep the system from hanging?
