A little known fact about Window's EXEs and DLLs. If you right click on one and hit "Properties", one of the tabs is "Version" which includes the version number of the file. It is a common thing for "Install Shield" to check this version number against the version number of the file being installed and only install if the file is "newer".
I haven't checked this on CDJ.EXE to see if Colby has been putting a version number on it. Colby: If you haven't seen it, you can set this version number in the Resources in MS Developer Studio.
BTW, Colby: InstallShield Express is only about $200-300, is very easy to use and is extremely nice for the customer.
