After opening the database in Access, (again - I had done this previously- but made no changes - this time I opened it, sorted on Artist and closed.) this problem went away. However, I find if I drag and drop an image file to the image tab it is not saved to the database unless I do a save all. Other edits (Artist & Title - new CD entries) are saved OK.
