new version blew up my computer

Be careful & make a local copy of \windows\system\comctl32.dll before installing the 9/8/00 version. Mine overwrote it with an incompatible version & I couldn't even boot to safe mode. The only way to fix this was to boot to a command prompt (f8), then copy it back (make a copy of commctrl.dll as well in case), reboot, & change the permissions to read-only. For some reason it kept getting replaced after every reboot, even though I hadn't reinstalled the software. Of course I now have a version from the win98 disk which may not be compatible since I didn't have a local copy of this machine. Not happy last night until 3:30 AM trying to fix this.
