Using Slink-e without CTS flow control line?

So has anyone successfully written code that uses a Slink-e without the CTS flow control line enabled? I understand without this I can potentially overflow the Slink-e's internal buffer. However what if I emulated Slink-e's buffer in my software and then put delays in place between buffer copies from my software over to the Slink-e?

Of course I guess the Slink-e also uses the CTS line to determine if there is data available on the device or are we always polling to see if there is data?
