CDDB2 is the next generation of the CDDB database and disc recognition service. The new service offers significantly extended information for each CD title in the database. Examples include searchable credits for production, songwriting, and musicians (including instruments) at both disc and track-by-track level; over 250 genres; related URLs and associated content; and segments (portions of music that can be smaller or larger than a single track). The new service also offers support for international (non-ASCII) character sets and tags for language and geographical region. CDDB2 also offers developers an easier development environment using a CDDB Software Developers Kit (SDK) and client-shared library model for implementing the CDDB communication protocols and functions specific to the CDDB service (e.g. CDDB submits, user registration). Developers will be able to leverage CDDB's new user registration process to track usage of their application and help prevent unauthorized use of a developer's registration by pirate developers. Lastly, the new service will offer a number of revenue-generating opportunities for developers of CDDB-enabled applications. The new service accommodates the delivery of links, promotions, and content related to CD music. Marketers and retailers wishing to interact with music consumers can do so via the CDDB2 network when authorized by an application. CDDB will offer participation to developers in revenues created within the CDDB network.
