I know there used to be a 100 function per device limit, but that was removed some time ago. I haven't run up against it since and I've gone up to 256 functions.

I'm working on a system similar to what you've got going. I decided to generate all IR on the fly to reduced overhead. Every time you add another group (Sony, NEC, RC5, etc) it slows down the decoding and also increases the chances of a signal being decoded incorrectly.

Originally I was going to use RC5 commands to control the software, but it didn't seem to be reliably decoded. I wish there were some more documentation on SlinkE RC5/6 encoding/decoding, because using RC5/6 would be easiest to implement on the Pronto. I've decided (like you) to go with NEC format for controlling the software.

I would use high level devices for transmission if there was a way to make them transmit only. I will (obviously) use high level devices to receive, but transmit using the low level device or EZlearn (transmit only) devices.
