You are correct - it is fairly easy to link to the Slink-x server to capture IR and perform your own actions. One of the programs that I have done (and posted to the Nirvis BBS) is called IRHelper. It takes IR commands from your handheld remote to control the Creative Labs Encore DVD program on your PC.

I have events that send keystrokes to an existing application. You could do this or just write your own app that responds to IR.

I'm sure others have found some more interesting applications. I would like to hear of them too.
