I haven't really run into playing problems with the mp3's on the new release, but I still do have the problem with it not giving the time on most of my mp3's as well. It is really noticable with the screen saver. However, I am not a big user of the playlist, it is usually a mix of cd's and mp3's if I do use it. Otherwise the mp3s are played by double clicking it on the track list.
