This is a good procedure to use, but I think HyperTerminal may be causing you problems because the Slink-e speaks binary (all char 0-255 are used) and HyperTerminal most likely strips some of these. You can capture the data using other more advanced programs like PortMon from www.sysinternals.com

If your automation controller won't be listening to what's coming back from the slink-e, I'd suggest pre-pending the resume command to anything you send in case the slink-e had a previous error.

Also be aware that the sending device must be listening to the the CTS line from the slink-e for flow control and must send the bytes in a timely fashion to avoid a transmit timeout. (you can check for this by listening to what the slink-e sends back)
