Custom CAT-5 / DB-9 serial cables

I need to make a long custom cable that is described in the "Setting up the serial port" section.

I have the modular DB-9 connectors but want to confirm the wiring. The DB-9 connectors have eight wires (orange, green, blue, white, yellow, red, black, and brown) that come from the modular jack to pins...that are then to be inserted into the serial connector. What would be the color/number assignments? Can I do the same thing with both ends of the cable?
