X-10 How hard is it to do?

I have absolutely no programing experience (besides good old BASIC from my DOS years) X-10.com seems to have a good deal on package, and what I really want is that four button keychain remote to maybe dima light, play a pre-selected playlist, pause and just simply play. Do I need Visual Basic or other programing software or is it simply text files with crazy codes?
Thanks for your help! I'd love to automate, but I don't want to waste money if I won't get it working.
