Thanks for the information. I am still not sure if a VHS VCR will provide this information even if it say's it supports LANC. My guess is that different manufacturers may implement just enough of the protocol to get synchro -edit to work and thats all. Certainly up to date I can't get anything useful out of my Panasonics LAN socket. I do get a serial data feed out of the 5-pin panasonic style edit socket on the same machine, but have no idea on the protocol and how to decode it!

Oh well - early days!!!
