I buy these at Fry's electronics in the So. California area. They come in various styles: RJ11, RJ14, RJ45 with either DB9 or DB25 male or female. You simply use a standard cat-5 cable to patch into your wall outlet, then into the adapter. Then plug the DB9/25 into your PC. They run $4-5. When you get them, you have to insert the pins to create your own pinout. I believe somewhere there is a standard for RJ45 to DB9 pinouts, but as long as you do all of them the same, it doesn't matter what pinout you use.
