If you read the old posts I think I adequately explained why the old option was removed (and why it didn't work). If you choose the option "after current playing item in playlist and starts playing it" in View | Options | Library / Images, you are able to play items by just double-clicking them - exactly as it was previously - I'm not seeing how this requires any additional effort on your part...
