CDJ is not actually required for CM11a support.

Slinkeserv handles the serial communication with the slinke and with the CM11a. Once the CM11a device is loaded (can be loaded via CDJ's interface) CM11a commands can be sent and CM11a events can be received. You can also load the device file via the slinkx interface and work with the CM11a through the slinkx activex control.
